WESTERN SPECIALS
In the last year of their operation, the few remaining 'Westerns' were used on several well supported Farewell Charter Special Trains.

D1010 WESTERN CAMPAIGNER
This well supported Charter was oversubscribed by so much that a relief train was run, using the same locomotive. Curiously the relief train ran several days before the original booked train.

D1023 WESTERN FUSILIER
The very last charter, this time organised by British Rail themselves. Westerns Fusilier and Ranger were used in tandem to power the train, and the only other two remaining Westerns, Prince and Lady followed at a discreet distance, as replacements in case of a locomotive failure.

THE VERY LAST OF THE VERY LAST
On the Blocks at Paddington for the last time, the two Westerns bring the special safely home. On their retirement to Old Oak Common later, these last two locomotives were withdrawn from traffic, and the reign of the Western class diesels came to an end.
