IN STEAM AND AT WORK

A further look at steam around the regions.

'SLOW HAUL TO BRISTOL'

8F No. 48420 heading a Bristol bound goods train through Ealing Broadway.

'A FUSILIER FROM NOTTINGHAM'

A Nottingham to London Express Pulls Into St. Pancras Headed By Royal Scot Class 4-6-0 No. 46118 'Royal Welch Fusilier'

'OFF TO THE RACES'

Inter Regional Race Special heads for Newbury through Ealing Broadway behind Hall Class 4-6-0 No. 7923 'Speke Hall' (The careless fireman has let the slack pipe dangle from the cab. Dangerous, and a disciplinary offence on the Southern.)

'THE DRAGON'S LAIR' (3)

LMR Locomotives resting between duties at Kentish Town Shed.

'COAL STAGE PILOT'

Southern       0-6-2T No. 32416 pushes another rake of coal trucks towards the coal stage at Feltham Shed

'PREP AND DISPOSAL DUTY'

Lord Nelson Class 4-6-0 No. 30856 'Lord St.Vincent' coming on shed for turning, at Nine Elms. 'Lord St.Vincent' was one of the final three Nelsons in revenue earning service and was withdrawn just prior to the other two in September 1962. All three were scrapped at Eastleigh in November of that year.

A 'SCHOOLS' GOES NORTH

The L.M.R were very impressed with the Schools class 4-4-0s of the Southern. As their withdrawal commenced a plan was mooted to transfer these powerful locomotives to the Midland Region, there to double head with the hard pressed L.M.R stud during the lead up to modernisation. Sadly this was not to be and these fine engines were soon consigned to the scrap man.
