MORE ARTHURIAN KNIGHTS

The summer timetable of 1960 saw the remaining King Arthurs from the Eastern and Brighton Sections transfer to the Western Section, and consequently back on the main line for a brief, but welcome swan-song. Their ranks were decimated after the summer rush and very few remained when the summer timetables came into being in1961.

EX STEWARTS LANE BUT NOW A NINE ELMS ENGINE

No. 30763 'Sir Bors de Ganis' Brings An Up Bournemouth Relief Through Wimbledon In June 1960. It Was Good To See Arthurs Working Fast Trains Again At This Late Stage In Their History, As Well As Their More Usual Semi-Fasts. 'Sir Bors' Was Withdrawn In September 1960, And Scrapped In October.

GOODBYE TO STEWARTS LANE

Strange Surroundings For No. 30803 'Sir Harry le Fise Lake' As He Takes To The Western Section In December 1958 Bound For His New Home At Eastleigh Shed. He Was Seen As A Bargain However And Served There Until Withdrawal In August 1961. He Was Scrapped Shortly Afterwards During September.

LONGER LIVED THAN MOST

Looking Decidedly Uncared For No. 30796 'Sir Dodinas le Savage' Was Destined However, To Be One Of The Last 1962 Survivors. Here He Brings A Semi-Fast To Basingstoke Through Wimbledon In The Summer Of 1960. No. 30796 Was Withdrawn From Bournemouth Shed In February 1962, And Cut Up In April.

WELL USED AND A REAL GOOD-UN

A Credit To The Fitters Of Dover Shed, And Seen Here After Transfer To The Western Section No. 30798 'Sir Hectimere' Having Swapped His Six Wheeled Tender For A Standard Urie 8 Wheeler, Proved To Be A Fine Locomotive And Was In Continuous Regular Service From Bournemouth, Basingstoke, And Finally Eastleigh Sheds Until Withdrawal In June 1962. He Was Cut Up In July

A BIT LATE ON A BOURNEMOUTH EXTRA

No. 30773 'Sir Lavaine' Nearly Caught Me Out As He Appeared Suddenly After The Passing Of A Portsmouth Electric Unit. Although Steam Was Shut Off He Was Travelling Quite Fast, Perhaps A Bit Too Fast For The London Suburbs! No Doubt Late In The Summer Traffic Mish-Mash Of Reliefs And Specials. 'Sir Lavaine' Was Withdrawn From Eastleigh Shed In February 1962 And Scrapped In April.

SUBSTITUTING FOR A FAILED 'BULLIED'

Another Bournemouth Extra Leaving A Wet And Dreary London, Hauled By An Equally Wet And Dreary 'Sir Uwaine' No. 30791. He Was An Eastleigh Engine, And As This Was Taken In May 1960 It Was The Last Time I Saw Him. 'Sir Uwaine' Was Withdrawn In May 1960 And Scrapped Immediately.

A POOR PHOTO OF A FINE ARTHUR

One Of The Arthurs That Ended Their Days At Feltham, A Goods Only Shed. (He Was Officially Allocated To Basingstoke But Never Got There) Feltham S15s Were Pressed Into Summer Service On Semi-Fast Passenger Trains So It Was Appropriate That Any Spare N15s They Had Were Used In Their Proper Role. Here No. 30793 'Sir Onzlake' Brings An Up Semi-Fast Through Wimbledon. No. 30793 Was Finally Withdrawn In August 1962 And Cut Up In September. He Was The Fourth From Last Of His Class In Service.

King Arthur No. 777 (30777) Lives On, The Last Survivor. He was known amongst enginemen on the Eastern Section of the Southern as 'The prial of sevens' or 'The Austin seven.' Engines in the 763 to 806 (30763-30806) Number series were known universally as 'Scotchmen', having been built to order in that fair country. 'Sir Lamiel was reputed to be the fastest Arthur having distinguished himself on a pre-war run on the Bournemouth Main Line. The boiler he now carries in preservation was previously fitted to Eastleigh Arthur No. 30454 'Queen Guinevere'. She was withdrawn in October 1958 and scrapped in November 1958.
